RIDERLESS HORSE CEREMONY

As we enjoy the rich history of the IGRA, we cannot help but be thankful for the friends and family that share this incredible event. Gay Rodeo will always be a celebration of sportsmanship, charity, and most importantly, friendship.

As we share our time together amongst friends and family, we cannot help but reflect upon the memories of friends who have gone before us. With the ceremony of the Riderless Horse, we honor their spirit, dedication and love through imagery and music.

The ceremony of the riderless horse symbolizes the end of the relationship between the horse and rider. This ceremony started in the early days of the Cavalry, and we proudly continue this tradition today within the IGRA rodeo family.

The riderless horse represents a salute to comrades, friends and family no longer with us – in the gay rodeo community we tend to recognize this as a symbol of those who have been taken from us from AIDS. However, it is more than just that, it is a dedication and remembrance to those who have been taken from us for whatever reason – no matter who they are or why they are gone.

The members of the Oklahoma Gay Rodeo Association dedicate this ceremony to the memory of those men, women and children who graced us with their lives and have ascended to bless us from Heaven.

Lisa LeAnn Dalton and Phillip Pregeant will lead our horse today. Lisa Leann being with us today is nothing short of a miracle. Our dear friend and sister experienced a fall that would have broken the spirit of anyone else, but not Lisa LeAnn. Lisa LeAnn experienced severe injuries including broken cervical bones and spinal cord trauma. She was not able to leave Denver for weeks and was transported home to Dallas by medical air service. Lisa LeAnn spent the following months learning to master the simplest of tasks such as holding a cell phone and writing her name. This is a tragic story, but it has a very happy ending. Lisa LeAnn is here with us today to remind every one of us that friends and family can rely on each other in times of crisis and we should cherish our friendships. Thank you to Phillip who has been by Lisa’s side as she continues down her long road to recovery. He is truly are a kind and wonderful man!
